Different lighting conditions, different lenses and cameras, and their settings lead to different colors. Color charts help to balance these and reproduce colors accurately, because every monitor and printer, even if uncalibrated, displays colors differently. Not only do great colors lead to success, but also sharp images. A focus checker helps ensure the correct image area is always in focus.

For artistic shots, it is often difficult to use autofocus, and the Focus Char helps to set the manual focus correctly. This is suitable for interviews or recordings from a constant distance, as it allows you to deactivate autofocus, preventing unintentional focus adjustments and helping to conserve battery power. Without autofocus, you save a considerable amount of energy.

If you use the same picture profiles, such as Cine-D or similar, the color settings of different cameras, even from different manufacturers, are quite similar, and most users can avoid this kind of effort with the color chart.

The color chart I tested was printed on thicker paper using a standard inkjet printer. Laser printers are less suitable because the ink is reflective. The inkjet printer isn't calibrated, but I only use it to match footage from different cameras; color accuracy isn't important for my videos. Important Note:

The cards shown above should be printed with calibrated (color-calibrated) printers to achieve perfect results. However, even imperfect characters greatly improve the image quality. For an amateur like me, this makes the work much easier. A professional would, of course, never print these themselves, but if you ever have the opportunity to work professionally, you'll already be experienced and better results are guaranteed.

It would be great to always have these three cards with you, but you shouldn't put any reflective protective material over them, as the reflections could distort the result. I'm planning to design makeup-case-style flip-top cases for 3D printing so that the cards are always protected in my pocket and can be adjusted immediately if the lighting conditions or focus position changes.

Conclusion

The best colors straight from the camera are useless if you then work with an uncalibrated monitor in post-production. Therefore, you should at least work with a calibrated device. No, it doesn't have to be the best monitor that covers the entire color gamut, but the white balance and ideally the color reproduction should be calibrated.
